5:th edition Imperial Guard Codex

Well, I finaly got to take a look on the new IG Codex. And after some quick reading my opinion is that it's a solid book for a solid army. The IG has been upgraded from being the army with a lot of minis to being a army that can dish out some real nasty stuff. The only thing that is sad to see is that Last Chancers have been substituted with Penal Legion squads. Downgraded and without the leadership of Colonel Schaeffer. On the other hand there are a lot of new additions when it comes to characters, including Straken "Ironhand" and Sly "The one-man army" Marbo. But the most important thing is the additions of vehicles to the army. Now you don't have to turn to Imperial Armour books to add some heavy stuff to your army - like the Deathstrike Missile Launcher (something that I've previously only seen in Epic).
I could go on and on all day about this, but I got better things to do, like slapping some paint on my Hellblades and on my Lesser Daemons.

Dark Heresy: Disciples of The Dark Gods

A dark day in december I finaly got my hands on this book. And I have to say that it was worth waiting for. The overall look of this book is just as good as any of the other books that Fantasy Flight has released into the game. This time around I can honestly say that this is one scary book. The structure of the book follows the three (biggest) Ordos of the Inquisition. You got your Xenos-threats, your heretics and your Daemons. And you also get a well-written scenario at the end of the book that can really put the players in a tight spot. The only drawback, as I see it is that I had hoped for some more gear, some interresting relics and some more "usefriendly" adversaries. I'm personaly not fond about stuff that say : "If it touches you - you die", well, it works in CoC but not in Dark Heresy.

This book is a must-buy for all Dark Heresy Gamemasters. I'll promise that you will find a 1001 new ways to torment your players after you read it - I did anyway!
Right now the only thing to do is to wait until "Creatures Anathema" is released!

The future, things to come etc...

Well, I'm usually not the one to run with rumors and stuff like that. But when you spend time around other gamers and builders you are bound to get your fair share of rumors from the mill, so to speak. Today my topic is the future. Well, I've visited this topic on a regular basis in the past but I try not to put to much value in them. As I see it rumors are just rumors until they are confirmed. But let's not talk about rumors but more concrete facts about the future. So what are the facts? Well, we got the SM Drop pods - it started out as a rumor but now it seems like we are going to have to pay the price for a "Rhino" to get one of these kits. It also means that you don't have to blast holes in you wallet (read: order from Forge World). And in my ears that's just about right. The new edition of the rules, that puts all the weight on Troops will make the drop pod a nice strategic choice. It will give the Space Marines that edge that you can expect from a Marine type of force. So as I see it, I see my old plans for a "Blood Angels"-army taking form once again. Another interresting project on the horizon is the "remake" (or new edition if you like) of the Imperial Guards Codex. Some sources say that you are going to be able to use more Armour in your army. And that's always nice. Not that I'm working on, or going to start an IG army anytime soon (but you never know).
Fall and the following winter will be an interresting time to say the least!

Big, bigger, Apocalypse...

Or will GW ever go “small”. Resurrect the Killteam. After the release of the “Last Chancers”-box lots of years ago there haven’t been any “smallscale” ideas from GW:s thinktank. Everything has gotten bigger and bigger. And with the launching of the Apocalypse: Reload things will certainly get even bigger. Unfortunately the new edition of the rules didn’t contain any new thoughts on Killteam-gaming, but there is a new feel about the game. There has been a change in GW:s tone towards the game. With more emphasis on the “story” and a bit less on the “hardcore rules”. The rules are not there to facilitate “I win – You Lose” but the idea of a “good game” or “Fun game”. But in the end the truth is now obvious that the, so called “Kill Team “-rules from the last edition of the rules have been stricken from the book. Instead there are now references to the ”Apocalypse”-rules. So instead of opening up for smaller games GW now opens up the door for the “big(!)” games. But in all honestly the “Apocalypse”-rules are free and without boundaries. So why not shrink it down? In the spirit of the “free form of the game” I can easily see an opening that brings back the essence of the “Killteam”. You could always follow the guidelines that you can find in the previous edition or you could just use some common sense and pitch the battle in any way you and your companions feel like.

An excellent addition or not?

Well, I haven’t got my greasy paws on the book yet, but I have had a chance to read some parts of it. The overall feeling about this book is, just “wow!”. This one is a big book; 258 pages full of good stuff for the Heresy. On the positive side the book is split up in different sections. Based on the different homeworlds and the different careers you have a lot of different background traits that you can add to your character. And of course you have a lot of different gear, guns and armor to choose from (yes the Hellguns/pistols and the old Gravitongun is included as is the Refractor Field). The first chapter of the book presents the “advanced character creation”-system. Here you can really add some interesting stuff to your players backgrounds. It can also add stuff that takes your campaign in the direction you want it to go. The second chapter presents different “Calixian career paths”. Here you find the rules you need to play a member of the Adepta Sororitas. And not to forget the Metallican Gunslinger. Chapters three thru six gives you information about the different types of worlds that exists, like feral worlds, war zones, hive worlds etc. Here you can find useful information about the different worlds in the Calixian Sector, superstitions, stories and different organizations that are at work on the different worlds. A nice touch is the parts in these chapters that present the different weapon and armor patterns that are in use on the different worlds. On the downside I have to say that the “Advanced character creation”-system and the “advanced careers” has a bit of cluttered feel to it, two parts of the book that comes around as kind of “uptight” in comparison with the rest of the book. But on the other hand I can’t personally say how it could be improved so I better just leave the topic right there. As I discussed in an earlier topic I was hoping for more info about Xenos but it seems like I have to be disappointed once again on that point. But there’s so much more in this book! Reading the chapters about the different worlds really sets the dark tone of the game on yet another level. But the price tag on this baby is a bit hefty! But on the other hand it’s almost 260 pages of info you get for your money!

With both “Purge the unclean” and “Inquisitors Handbook” released you can only wonder about the future of the game. What will Fantasy Flight Game do with it now? Black Industries had highflying hopes for the game and the future, so it will be highly interesting to see what Fantasy Flight Games will do with it.

This game will surely be revisited in the future!

The new GW washes!

I had the heavenly experience to try out the new GW washes at the local GW-store today!
And after reading the latest issue of White Dwarf, I have to say that I was curious to say the least. And to continue on the same line: all the things they say about this new product is true! And GW is not paying me to say this about their product. The experience is a lot different from using the, now, old GW inks. The coolest thing about them is:

1) The washes dont "pool up" on the surface, like the inks could do if you used to little water.
2) You can, without problem layer the washes, a lot of times, without risk damaging the underlaying washlayer or the underlaying paint.
3)
When it dries, the wash dries with a matt finish.
4) It seems that the wash can be applied with a lot less "drying time" in between layers of wash and layers of paint.
5) The different washes can easily be mixed together and thinned with water.

But there are some things that you must remember about them:
1) Use much more wash on your brush than you think from the beginning.
2) It tends to "pool up" on flat surfaces (but this can create a cool effect in some cases).
3) Apply the wash and let gravity do the job! Don't try and brush it, just apply it.
Now on to the sad part. Due to "delivery mixups" I won't be able to get my hands on these goodies on the release day, which is tomorrow! And that's big time bad! Now I have to wait until I can get my hands on them.

So from now on, these are on the top of my wish-list!

New releases, stuff and books.

There's a lot of stuff going on right now! The release of the new Daemons and all the buzz about the new, 5:th edition of Warhammer 40k is about to go to my head. I'm getting tired about all the rumors about all the changes that are to come! (or not to come). Frankly speaking: I don't care! But the reason for that could be that I'm more interrested in building/converting/painting than in gaming! I read the latest edition of White Dwarf the other day, and the info on the new rules edition was scarse to say the least. But the stuff about the "line of sight" isn't really that new. At my place this one has always been the "house-rule", in all 40k and Necromunda games.
But I do have to say that if GW wants to take the game down a more "storyfriendly"-road, then I'm the last person to complain! I have always opted for more story and less rules. I'm no "rules-lawyer" and I hate everything that it stands for. What the new, 5:th edition of Warhammer 40K rules will contain is a question for the future to resolve. I'm not going to dig into all the rumors out there!
On a more interresting point Fantasy Flight Games have announced the releases of the "Purge the unclean" and "Inquisitors Handbook" -books. Now that's good news I tell you! But it there will be a hefty pricetag on them both. But the "Inquisitors Handbook" feels like a "must-buy" in my mind. In my opinion there are a lot of gaps in the core-rulebook that needs to be filled. I'm especially thinking about more info on guns, armor, gear and vehicles. And there are a lot of info-gaps when it comes to some of the Xenos. I'd like more gamestats on Orks, Eldar, Tyranids and why not stats on Space Marines when they are at it.
Well, I don't think that I will ever be perfectly satisfied. But you can always hope that they hit the jackpot!
